As it pleases the True Lord, He gives us sustenance.





Shalok, First Mehl:
Tigers, hawks, falcons and eagles-the Lord could make them eat grass.
And those animals which eat grass-He could make them eat meat. He could make them follow this way of life.
He could raise dry land from the rivers, and turn the deserts into bottomless oceans.
He could appoint a worm as king, and reduce an army to ashes.
All beings and creatures live by breathing, but He could keep us alive, even without the breath.
O Nanak, as it pleases the True Lord, He gives us sustenance. ||1||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pauri. ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਮ ਨਾਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥ He, within whose mind Thou enterest, O Lord, obtains everlasting  Peace. He, within whose mind Thou enterest, O Lord, suffers not at the hands of death's courier. ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿ ਕਾੜਿਆ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ He who remembers Thee, O Lord; him no anxiety befalls, He, whose Friend the creator is; all his affairs are adjusted. ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਨੁ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਨੁ ॥ He, who meditates on Thee, O Lord acceptable becomes that person. He, who cherishes Thee, O Lord, gathers great wealth. ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਸੋ ਵਡ ਪਰਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਿਆ ॥੬॥ He, who cherishes Thee, O Lord, is gifted with huge family. He, who thinks of Thee, O Lord, emancipates his lineage.
